How much wear and tear will it be subject to from the weather, from pets, from animals/game? These are all important considerations as most property owners expect a fence to last many years.
Premium Garden Fencing in Calgary
For city residents, privacy is often important. Many families also have pets and, of course, we love our dogs, so this may be a particularly important factor when selecting your garden fence type.
You might also need a smaller fence around a vegetable garden if you like to grow your own produce.
For rural properties, keeping unwanted intruders out is a prime consideration for the type of garden fence you install. Deer are lovely animals but they can wreak havoc on private property!
Whatever your location, the weather here is bound to play a big role in your decision.

Main Types of Garden Fencing in Calgary
Below is a quick rundown of the types of garden fencing in Calgary that we install.
Pressure Treated Wooden Fences
Pressure-treated wood is a popular choice of garden fence material in Calgary homes because:
- It provides the fine wooden look but is more durable than untreated wood
- The micronized copper azole is forced into wood fibres, making it resistant to insect damage and wood decay for decades
- It is strong enough to be used on rural properties
The only real downside of pressure-treated wood for a garden fence is that it requires some maintenance to prevent rot and discolour.
Cedar Garden Fence
Cedar has wonderful natural properties that make it ideal for fences in Calgary and it is especially popular because of its natural characteristics:
- Excellent durability against the elements – not surprising as cedar grows naturally in parts of Canada
- Natural oils prevent damage from insects, rotting and warping
- Strong enough to be used for gardens in rural properties
- Split cedar fences can bring an “old west” feel to a rural property
Exotic Hardwoods/Composites Garden Fence
Exotic hardwoods and composites are also well-suited to garden fences in Calgary:
- Durable and long-lasting
- Easy to maintain due to their natural insect and rot-resistance
- Natural hardwoods are heralded for the beauty they can bring to a property
Stained or Painted Wood Fence
A good way to extend the life of a wooden garden fence is to paint or stain it. This can keep costs down but does requires some extra effort on your part:
- Provides protection against insects/rot/weather damage
- Improves curb appeal
- Can add colour and a unique look to your garden
Vertical or Horizontal-Slatted Wood Fence
Most wooden garden fences in Calgary homes have vertical slats or pickets attached to rails between fence posts. These come in a range of heights and styles.
However, a less-traditional option is using horizontal slats. This can provide a unique garden fence appearance that is often seen on rural properties.
Ornamental Fence
Ornamental fencing is less popular than wooden or chain link fencing in Calgary, largely due to its higher cost. It can, however, provide a beautiful and ornamental finish to any garden:
- A unique, high-class appearance that can add curb appeal to a garden
- Great strength and durability
- Good security, especially with iron points at the top
- Less privacy than most wooden fences
Vinyl Garden Fence
Vinyl fencing is known for its high durability and low maintenance, making it an ideal choice for homeowners who want to, more or less, set and forget their garden fence:
- Resistant to rot
- Five times the tensile strength of wood, making it very well-suited to the Calgary climate
- 100% recycled materials keep it easy on the environment
- No painting or staining required, making it very low-maintenance (just needs a clean from time to time)
Chain Link Fence
Chain link fencing is a highly practical choice that has been used in Calgary properties for over a century. It provides good security and protection for a garden and is ideal for keeping dogs in – but provides less privacy than some homeowners like:
- Tough and durable galvanized steel
- No problems with rot or insects
- Perfect for dog runs or pens
- Excellent for fencing off a vegetable patch
- Cost-effective and easiest option to install
Deer Fence
Deer are wonderful animals but they can be bad news for a garden in a rural area. Not only can they harm your plants but they can also carry ticks that can be passed on to pets and other animals.

Do You Need a Permit to Build a Fence in Calgary?
It depends.
There are restrictions concerning the height and location of fences in Calgary.
You will need to abide by the following restrictions in order to avoid having to apply for a permit:
- The maximum height allowed in front yards is 3’11”
- The maximum height for backyards is 6’6”
- If you want to include a gate, it can be up to 8’2” high
- Fences on corner properties can be a maximum of 2’6” along a section of the side and front property lines
- Fences cannot be built on city property or in any City Utility Rights-of-Way without a relaxation or permit.
What Is The Lowest Maintenance Garden Fence Available?
Vinyl, ornamental and chain link are three of the lowest maintenance options for garden fencing as they are both resistant to insects and rot. Neither types need staining or painting.
